Only one of these locos was built (w/n 420042 of 1958) and this was for Bord Na Mona in Ireland. BNM wanted a more powerful but lightweight replacement for their fleet of 40DL and 48DL locomotives and approached Rustons who built a prototype. The BNM carried out trials with the loco but decided that they wanted a loco fitted with a Ford engine. Rustons would not do this and the BNM built their own loco based on features used in the Ruston and eventually, an order for new locomotives was placed with the Hunslet Engine Co. in the form of the Wagonmaster class.
